Tupuna translates as 'Ancestor'. It generally means one's relationships and connections in terms of whakapapa (bloodline, heritage and identity) both physically and metaphysically. This means that Atua (Maori gods) or natural formations (eg. mountains or rivers) are also considered ancestors.

Tupuna is also a metaphor for flourishing, thriving and growing, because it relates to what has come before - the wisdom, knowledge, experiences and beliefs that has filtered down through each generation to now. In other words, we are the sum of what has evolved over time and space, and we are the present generation that were once the 'hopes and dreams' of those who came before us.

My Tupuna series is a conversation about my understanding of the past, as seen through my lens.
