Whakamaho means to lie still or be of quiet mind. Papatuanuku (Earth Mother) lies on her back facing upward toward Ranginui (Sky Father). Ranginui rules the heavens above. He bathes her body with sunlight during the day and moonlight by night, so that he may always see his beloved Papa.
This artwork is a tribute to Gordon Walters. He was a contemporary New Zealand artist who created the famous Koru series of the 1970's. The same koru design that is in this artwork. They were largely influenced by symbolic forms of Maori rock art which he held a particular interest in for over 30 years. Gordon Walters died in 1995.
